Doubt and Fear within he Winter King

The winter king is the first of the war lord chronicles trilogy.  This book displays many circumstances with doubt and fear involved.  One one of these circumstances is that many of the people in the army hope that Merlin will come back and help them fight against Saxons.   Another is a par in the story that Arthur has to face a rival general In a trial of arms or the court of swords.  And the last circumstance is when Galahad rides to get help form the Allies of Arthur army while the army is being beaten in a fierce battle.

In the Middle part of the book The people of the kings court are fighting over who should be the next high kings protector. Some of the men think that it should be Arther.  Many of the people in that point in the book are concerned that if it is not Arthur the kingdom will not fall into the right hands.  Many wish that Merlin were there to give them guidance in what to do.  Merlin in this story is made out to be a very old wise man that no many thing about the way that things should be done.  As it happens Merlin dose not come then but later on in the book when all of the armies are about to fight a massive war against each other.  He tries to make them see reason, but the army’s are content to continue fighting with each other.

Near the beginning of the book Arther chooses to fight a general named Owain.  Owain had been charged with murdering a bunch of miners,  and he had pleaded not guilty.  He almost won the trial but Arther challenged him to trial by arms with the victor being the on that was telling the truth.  Many of the bystanders though that Arthur would lose that fight but he pulled it off in the end by defeating the rival general.  There was much fear in that arena many though that Arthur would lose but it turned out that he didn’t.

The last is when Galahad is sent riding back to the main fortress to get reinforcements from other lords.   For a whole day Arthur army fought against there enemies many doubting that Galahad would return with more men.  When he dose come back he only brings a very small portion of men but still some relief for some of the men.  It still isn’t enough and many of the soldiers think that they will be defeated by the army of the enemy.  It turns out that the Irish come to Arthur rescue and every thing turns out fine.

So as you can see there are many things in a life that a person can doubt and fear but most of the time if you do what you know is right it will turn out ok.  For example this is a trilogy and it would be very short if Arthur had died or his army had been crushed and out of loyalty to his king it think that he will survive till the end of the series.

Beyond the Shadows

This book is about an assasssian that is trying to save his country of  Cenaria  from destruction.  His name is Kyler Stern, he is joined by his best friend Logan Grye, and his former master Derzo Blint.  At the beginning of the book Kyler has just finished killing the god king Groth Useal.

The book starts by Logan swearing fielity to the unworthy queen Terah Graesin.  When Kyler gets back from Khalidor He is dicusted to find that after all of his efforts to get Logan out of prison so he could be king, he goes and gives it to the a unrightful queen.  At the same time Lantano Garuwashi Is trying to take over Cenaria. He is the ruler of Ceura, a very small country to the south of Cenaria, and is trying to expand his borders.  He soon realizes that his army is hopelessly out numbered and abandons  the attempt at taking Cenaria.

This is were the book gets relay interesting.  Kyler kills Terah Graesin thereby making Logan king.  But he dose it in front of many witnesses one of them being Logan.  Now Logan is an Honorable man so he decrees that he should be put to death by the wheal.  But instead of dying he goes to the home of the Wolf, A mysterious Creator that is the lord of the realm between life and death.

The wolf brings Kyler back to life.  and so Kyler starts again trying to save his country.   He goes with Derzo to the Chantry with his friends Elene and Vi.  After that Kyler marches with the army to Toris bend on the way he and Derzo find a magic sword.  they also learn that to save his country Kyler will have to attempt the impossible – Assassinate a goddess.

In the end to save the world Kyler berries Crouch up to the hilt in Elene’s side.  Elene had been possessed by the evil goddess Khali she was able to resist for a few moments and Kyler killed them both.  Finally Kyler goes and lives with VI and Drezo in a house in Cenaria.

Prologue: Near Death

The rain hammered down on the ground turning it into mud. I hate this part, hate it, thought Kira,she was riding a patrol on the border of the kingdom. This was  one of Kira’s least favored parts,  And to top everything off it was raining.  her horse was even least pleased with her.  It was pitching and bucking his head back and forth.  This usually meant that he was annoyed.  They had been riding for 2 days now and it was beginning to get rather old.

After a wile she saw something up ahead.  She raised her left hand and reined her horse with her right hand.  As the rest of her company halted beside her.

“what do you think that is” she asked the elf beside her.

Elves are renowned for there superior senses this included there eye sight.

“I’m not sure”answered the very tall elf.”what ever it is we should approach with caution”

As they started there advance again they noticed that it appeared to be a man ling in the road.  he appeared to be crawling toward them as if severely wounded but alive as they slowed to a halt beside the man, Kira got of her horse and knelt beside the man.  She noticed that he was a Bearlainian (a country that had just bean concurred by the lord Grothel).   the was severely wounded and need to be taken back to the palace immediately.   Kira rode through the night the and most of the next day when she arrived and the castle she was immediately told to go to her quarters and sleep.  But she only agreed to do so only after she insured that he was in good care.  Then she slept long and deep and had some very fruitful dreams.

The Sorcerer of the North

The Rangers apprentice is a series of books that are about a young man named Will that, in the beginning has no skill but climbing.  But the Ranger in that part of the kingdom believes that this kid could a ranger as well.  So after that other task masters have all ready rejected him the Ranger says that he will take him as an apprentice.

In the fifth book, the sorcerer of the north, Will is sent on a trip to the frozen fief (or a part of the kingdom that has a castle and lord) of Norgerate to investigate a so called sorcerer that has poisoned Lord Syron, who is the Lord of Castle Macindaw. The sorcerer is called Malkallam and he had had a feud with Syrons ansestors about 100 years earlier.  Now the people of norgerate fief think that there is a sorcerer in the in Grimsdell wood.  In the wood their have been strange lights sighted and their have been strange sounds in the wood at night.  so will task was to go to castle Macindaw and find out who the person is who has poisoned the lord of the castle.

Will is joined by his old friend Alyss as they go north.  Once they are at the castle for two days Will decides to go into grimsdell wood and see what e can find.  He is confronted by the dreadful night warrior whom, when he goes back the next day, he  finds that he is simply an illusion.  Later when will goes back into the castle he is summoned to the lords chamber and is asked to help him escape his owe castle.  Will is told that the lord is not the traitor but that it is the leader of the army in the castle who is trying take over the castle and that the the current lord has been poisoned.  He asks will to take him to the sorcerer in the wood.  He tells will that Malkallam was ounce a healer and might help him.  Will has to leve behind his friendin the castle on his way out of the castle in order to escape.  this is very troubling for will.

Will leads the lord, whoses name was Orman, and his secritary, Xander, through Grimsdell wood in order to find the sorcerer.  When they do learn him,  they find two things.  One that Malkallam’s real name is Malcolm and that he is not a sorcerer but in fact he is still a healer.  he agrees to heal lord Orman  and cures his sickness.  afterward Will decides that is is time to get Alyss out of the castle and to safety.  He tries ounce to get her out but the traitor comes and forces Will to leave. The book ends with Will bartering with the warlike Skandian tribe for help.

This book is a great example of identity For example Will has a choice to get lord Orman out or try to help his friend.  He knows that the right thing to do is to help the Lord and so he dose that.  This shows that he has great courage in him self. Overall this is a great book and I highly recommend it to everyone.

The Battle of the Labyrinth

In life there are many things that we can doubt  and fear.  The question is what we do about it? There are many challenges that we face because of what our mind says.   Occurrences like this are sometimes tragic and make our lives very miserable. This makes anger and hatred natural in this situation.  I have had death in my life that  made me angry at the world, and at God.  In “The Battle of  the Labyrinth” Nico, the son of Hades,  has his sister killed and he blames it on Percy, the son of Poseidon. This book is similar to other books I have read such as Eragon. In the world  “The Battle of the Labyrinth” is similar  to key battles in the World War II.

For me, this book is real, as there are things that  hapened in my life that I can relate to in the lives of the people in the book.  In the early part of the book, Junus, the god of  choices, doorways, beginings and endings, gives  Annabeth a choice of which tunnel to take the labyrinth.  She doesn’t have to take it because Heara saves her and makes the choice for her.  This is similar to my life because when I was little many people made the choices for me but later I made the same choices myself.  Another thing is in the part where Charion tells Percy that he  knows that Nico is the son of Hades and that Percy had kept this a secret from him this is a frequent  occurrence for many people.  There are other parts that have been in my life like the part when Percy and Annabeth are fighting about weather or not to get some one else to lead them through the Labyrinth. people get into fights about what to do all the time and eventually they are solved. I have had fights with my sister about many things like which movie to watch, or what to have for supper when we are home by ourselves.

This book is very similar to others I have read, for example Eragon. These books are very similar because they both have epic battles  to defeat an evil army.  And both of the  characters were sure that they would not win.  This is where the doubt can come in.  It will create fear and make the character afraid of what they must do, but they must overcome this fear and make sure that the army pulls through and wins the battle.

In the world there have been many things that that are similar to this book.  One is in the movie “Saving Privet Ryan” that is set in the second world war. The army defends the town against all odds to let the allis cross the river the same thing happens in the The ”Battle of the Labyrinth” when the titan army tries to storm camp halfblood.  The halfbloods against all odds hold off the storm of the titan army.  The halfbloods army doubted that they would have any chance against the titan army.  The titan army attempted to fit through a  20 foot hole but they could only get about a3rd of the army through.  This made it a lot easier for for the halfblood army to hold off and defeat the Titan army

This is a very good book and I recommend it to everybody who likes Greek mythology.  These characters have many doubts and fears like what will the next prof icy and who will it be for.  There are doubts and fears everywhere in the world.  Doubt and fear will always be in our world, but if we know what to do, we can over come the doubt or the fear which ever it may be.

Competitive shooting

A few of the sports that I can see being popular  in the future are different types of competitive shooting.  There are many types of competitive  shooting in the world, one is long range shooting .    A different kind of shooting is trap or skeet which is done with a shotgun and clay pigeons. Another is cowboy action shooting or single action shooting  .These sports have a good chance of being a good promotion activity for people who want to learn to shoot.

One of the most amazing shooting sports is long range shooting.  This is done at over 1000 yards with big Boer rifles, firing “long for caliber” bullets.  One of the most common guns in this style of shooting is the .50 cal. BMG, this is the X  Canadian military sniper rifle cartridge.  Some other rifles are the  .308 Winchester and the .338 Lapua.  In this sport the competitors take turns shooting  at long ranges, at the end the person with the tightest group of holes, that is closest to the center wins. This is a hard thing to do because, at that distance the effect of mirage comes into play, and a target the size of a pie plate is very hard to hit when it moves. Last year my dad and I went to a gun show in Edmonton, and I saw a Barret .50cal long range rifle with matching bullets.  I was shocked to see that the shells were longer than a decimeter, and that the gun weighed almost 20lbs. This is just how big these rifles are.

Trap and skeet have been around for a long time. These sports  were originally used for field hunting practice in the sports early days, but has evolved into a thriving sport in the world. In trap, a clay pigeon is thrown from a machine and is shot by the competitor. In total, 25 clay pigeons are thrown. The person with the best average of hits wins.  In trap and skeet there are many different types of guns used though they are all shotguns, but there are different kinds of them.  On the stock on a shotgun designed for these sports, the chrome is higher, and the guns usually have very pretty wood work on them. Trap and skeet guns are usually double barreled shotguns to insure that a person dose not use to many shells in the gun.  For example if a person were to have a pump gun he could put up to 10 shells in the gun, this makes it a lot easier to cheat. On Sundays in the summer, the range south of Vermilion has a trap competition.  Sometimes my dad and I go and participate, it is pretty cool to watch the older people shoot.  They are extremely good at it. When I was in California I had the chance to go and shoot trap with a world champion trap shooter.  It was very cool, he showed me some things that I had never thought of. This sport has great potential because it is a accuracy and a speed game and it is very fun to play.

In the movies the wild west is brought back to us as history, but in a few places in Canada, they reenact these exciting events in real life. Cowboy action shooting, or single action shooting is a speed game, there are 5-10 stages that reenact different scenarios  of the wild west, they range from stage coach raids to poker disputes.  When you hear a beeper go off you may start your stage. The person with the fastest time wins.  This sounds very simple but it is a lot more complicated than that. there are certain types of guns that must be used, for example the minimum caliber your handgun can be is .32 cal. (Caliber is the diameter of the case in inches, so a .32 cal. is .32 inches in diameter).  When I was little I would go with my dad, my uncle and my cousin to a cowboy action shooting  range at Kelsey. This sport was entertaining to watch and even more entertaining to play this sport or so I was told, I never got the chance to play because I was to young.  In West Edmonton Mall  I went to a gun store called “Wild West” and met the world champion  shooter Ken Kupch I was very young and don’t remember much of it.  But this goes to show you that there are many people in this province that do these sports.

These sports have a good reason to go further because they are easy for people advertise.  Trap and skeet are already Olympic sports, the other two sports have great potential to go further.  If  T.V stations would promote them like they promote baseball and basketball they would have many more people in these sports.  But even if they don’t go any further they still  are challenging and fun to do.
