  1. Who was the protagonist? The protagonist in this story was a tragic hero. Andy was the protagonist. Protagonist means main character. Who was Andy? Andy was a 16 year old male who was apart of the Royals, the Royals were a rival gang of the Guardians. He also was a boyfriend to a girl named Laura. Laura was the love of Andy’s life, he one day wanted to have kids with Laura in the Bronx or Staten Island. Andy was also in a existential crisis. Existential crisis is when an individual questions their life choices and the very foundation of their life: whether their life has had any real meaning to it. He wondered why the Royals had been so important to him before.
  2. What is conflict? Conflict is an inherent incompatibility between the objectives of two or more characters or forces. It also creates tension and adds doubt to the story. The first conflict was when Andy had been stabbed by a Guardian. This type of conflict is considered man against man. Another man against man conflict was when Andy had been laying on the sidewalk bleeding and an intoxicated man came stumbling along assuming Andy had one to many drinks, so all the man did was offer him a drink, which did nothing for Andy. Andy also had a run in with a young couple who debated about helping him until they seen the purple jacket. A elderly lady came walking through with a sort of elegance. She was very hubris, especially the way she acted. She carried her umbrella like a queen. She was rummaging through the trash cans and within two minutes she had collected an old hat, string, newspapers, and a footstool with a broken leg.
  3. What does Andy represent? The title Andy originated from the Greek word Andreas which means man. Andy was also located on the arm of his jacket. Does Andy represent the name of the jacket or the name of the boy? I believe it represents Andy and not the jacket. What is/are the royals? The royals in this short story are a gang.
  4. Andy’s jacket has a brutal effect on him mainly because Freddy and Angela were afraid of getting involved with the two rival gangs.
  5. Freddy and Angela both ditch Andy because his jacket is purple and the know that is the colour of the Royals which is the rival gang of the Guardians. They were afraid that the Guardians would come after them next if they found out that they saved Andy.
  6. Andy had realized he was going to die when the young couple had left him alone.
  7. Andy takes his jacket off. He did this because he wanted to die as Andy and not as a Royal. He had felt that all the rumbles and fights were pointless. He didn’t want to be the Royal who was ambushed and stabbed he wanted to die as Andy.
  8. The climax was when Andy rolled over his little strength he had left and took off the jacket.
