I haven’t finished the book “The Hatchet” yet, but so far it is a good book. It has taught me a lot with what you should do in case you are lost in the middle of no where. He is a young boy that was lost in the woods somewhere in Canada after his pilot had a heart attack, and the plane crashed. After pilot had his heart attack Brain (the boy) had to fly the plane and crash it into a marsh or the lake edge. What would be going in your head if this happened to you? Would you try to fly or would you be to scared?
This book has made me more aware of what can happen to people, and what you should do in these situations. If this experience happened to me I would be scared at first, but would be able to cope with it sooner than later. I would be in shock at what happened and then go do what I need to do so I can survive until I am found. For example, I would build a shelter, find food, and make a fire. If you were lost out in the middle of no where what would you do first?
Just this year on a freakish natural event has happened. On January 12th, 2010 at 16:3 local time a earthquake hit and destroyed the island of Haiti. This earthquake caught the people of the near the town of Léogâne at a great surprise. By 24 January, at least 52 aftershocks measuring 4.5 or greater had been recorded. An estimated three million people were affected by the earthquake, the priminister reported that 200,000 people had been identified as dead and estimated that 300,000 injured had been treated. Jean-Max Bellerive the priminister of Haiti also estimated that 250,000 residences and 30,000 commercial buildings had collapsed or were severely damaged.
This natural event can seem so unnatural to different people. This earthquake destroyed peoples homes (making people homeless), businesses (making peoples life earnings, and jobs go down the drain), and has killed people (making families fall apart and they go in depression). Certain people such as business owners will think this event is unnatural because of the businesses that it has destroyed, or family member will think it is unnatural because of the number of people that have been injured or killed because of it. Even though it is a natural event it does unnatural things to the environment that you live in, and your friends and family.
After this disaster happened I personally didn’t do anything really fast. Even now I haven’t done as much as I could to help the people of Haiti. Yes, I gave money to the church to send it to Haiti but after looking at what I could have done I could have done a lot more. At first I didn’t believe that this would have any affect on me so I didn’t really care, but with the time I had to think it threw I now realize that with that kind of attitude the world wouldn’t be where it is at today. If everyone believed that just because it doesn’t affect them so they don’t have to do it the world wouldn’t be the same place, if a country with little had something happen to them (such as Haiti) and no one believed they should do something about it than that country wouldn’t be able to support its people and give them the care (food, shelter, water, etc…) they need to be able to live.
Even if a country with a ton of money is hit by something there is no way of telling if they will be able to pay for all the damage, so they more countries and the more people we have who help the countries/people that are hit by a natural disaster than the country/people will be able to get out of the tragedy that just happened to them. Even though we can’t give them their friends and family that have been killed or changed the way they are, we can help them by giving them a new home or building that will be able to stay strong if they are hit another time. This experience has helped me make myself a better person. It has changed the way I thought, and made me realize that it can happen to anybody. Just think if this happened to you and family members and friends were killed, your home or business destroyed, and all your life savings just disappeared right in front of you and you couldn’t do anything about it. How would that make you feel? I know if any of these things had happened to you, you would do anything to make it change. You would want either your friend(s), wife, child, mother, father, grandparent(s), or sibling(s) to be back with you, or if your house was destroyed you would do anything to find a shelter for yourself and your family. After reflection of what a natural disaster can cause I believe that without people helping others with what they need than the world won’t be able to last long with any more natural disasters.
Gaius Julius Caesar was born of Aurelia and Gaius Julius Caesar. His family had noble, patrician roots, although they were neither rich nor influential in this period. His aunt Julia was the wife of Gaius Marius, leader of the Popular faction.
Julius Caesar was an epicurean. Epicureanism is a system of philosophy based upon the teachings of Epicurus (c. 341–c. 270 BC), founded around 307 BC. Epicurus was an atomic materialist, following in the steps of Democritus. His materialism led him to a general attack on superstition and divine intervention. Following Aristippus—about whom very little is known—Epicurus believed that the greatest good was to seek modest pleasures in order to attain a state of tranquility and freedom from fear as well as absence of bodily pain through knowledge of the workings of the world and the limits of our desires. The combination of these two states is supposed to constitute happiness in its highest form. Although Epicureanism is a form of hedonism, insofar as it declares pleasure as the sole intrinsic good, its conception of absence of pain as the greatest pleasure and its advocacy of a simple life make it different from “hedonism” as it is commonly understood.
Stoicism was a school of Hellenistic philosophy founded in Athens by Zeno of Citium in the early third century B.C. The stoics considered destructive emotions to be the result of errors in judgment, and that a sage, or person of “moral and intellectual perfection,” would not have such emotions. Stoics were concerned with the active relationship between cosmic determinism and human freedom, and the belief that it is virtuous to maintain a will that is in accord with nature. Because of this, the Stoics presented their philosophy as a way of life, and they thought that the best indication of an individual’s philosophy was not what a person said but how he or she behaved. Later Roman Stoics, such as Seneca and Epictetus, emphasized that because “virtue is sufficient for happiness,” a sage was immune to misfortune. This belief is similar to the meaning of the phrase ’stoic calm’, though the phrase does not include the “radical ethical” Stoic views that only a sage can be considered truly free, and that all moral corruptions are equally vicious. Stoic doctrine was a popular and durable philosophy, with a following throughout Greece and the Roman Empire, from its founding until the closing of all philosophy schools in 529 AD by order of the Emperor Justinian I, who perceived their pagan character to be at odds with his Christian faith.
The cell phone is a long-range, electronic device used for mobile voice or data communication over a network of specialized base stations known as cell sites. In addition to the standard voice function of a mobile phone, telephone, current mobile phones may support many additional services, and accessories, such as SMS for text messaging, email, packet switching for access to the Internet, gaming, Bluetooth, infrared, camera with video recorder and MMS for sending and receiving photos and video, MP3 player, radio and GPS.
The first cell phone was invented by Martin Cooper in 1984. The first cell phone was known as “The brick” weighed 2 pounds, offered just a half-hour of talk time for every recharging and sold for $3,995. Too big and Overpriced?
In the beginning, two-way radios (known as mobile rigs) were used in vehicles such as taxicabs, police cruisers, ambulances, and the like, but were not mobile phones because they were not normally connected to the telephone network. Users could not dial phone numbers from their mobile radios in their vehicles.Originally, mobile phones were permanently installed in vehicles, but later versions such as the so-called transportables or “bag phones” were equipped with a cigarette lighter plug so that they could also be carried, and thus could be used as either mobile or as portable two-way radios.
The book “I am the Messenger” is a good book that reminds me of life because there are those people who help others, which is the main focus in the book. Some people help others because it is the right thing to do, or because they have to. For example, at our leadership conference in Calgary we helped a soldier feel good by writing letters, and a community clean by picking up garbage. This reminds me of all the good things that have been down or will be down by people, like some stranger helping an elderly across the side walk. Just the little things make people feel warm, and happy. This book isn’t really different from my life, but the fact that the character was forced to do all the good deeds to save himself. When I do a good deed it is usually because I want to. A situation like this has never happened to me, because when I there is something to be down I do it. Even though I am not forced to make people happy or do the right thing, I still do it on my own. When I read this book I felt confused but yet happy at the same time. I felt confused because I can’t see why people have to be forced in order to do the right thing, and I was happy because the right thing was being down and there is a positive outcome from it. I also felt happy because this book taught me that even the smallest things can make a difference, it taught me this because Ed kennedy the main character was given a to help, and all he needed to do was give them new Christmas lights. That is pretty amazing if all you have to do is give someone Christmas lights to make there family complete, and even better they treated him as if he was part of the family afterwards.
I am the Messenger doesn’t really remind me of any books I have read. This is the first book I have read that is involved with helping people. It has really taught me that the right thing to do can be right in front of you, such as not making fun of others, stopping other people who are making fun of others. This book is more different than the same because there are not really a lot a of books that talk about others helping each other. Even though there should be there just isn’t.
This book reminds me of how the world needs more people that are willing to do the right thing, it reminds me that our world needs more leaders instead of followers. This book reminds me that we just need that one little step to help us get past war, get past suicide, to get past negative talk, and to get past pollution. The text is similar because it talks about on how man rapes his wife every night, and how there is a priest that hasn’t seen his brother because his brother won’t talk to him. All this negative stuff in the book turns to positive because Ed helps the wife get rid of the husband, and Ed gets the priests brother to talk to each other. If only the world had a whole lot of Ed’s the world would be a better place. This text is different because people don’t just randomly give you places to go to help the world, or in Ed’s case to help himself. The part when Ed had to help his friends reminded me of when I have to see friends helping each other, or me helping my friends. Even though what he did to help his friends is much harder. The whole book kind if reminds me of leadership, because Ed is the leader that is providing the world with goodness.

Braveheart is a movie that is based in 1280 A.D. Edward I of England, known as “Longshanks”, occupied much of Scotland, and his oppressive rule there leads to the deaths of William Wallace’s father and brother. After Wallace was raised by his uncle, the Scots continued to live under Longshanks’ power. Wallace rekindles a romance with his childhood friend Murron after showing her the carefully preserved thistle she gave him as a child, and the two get married in secret to avoid the guards. But after Wallace attacks a group of English soldiers attempting to rape her, the village Sheriff prevents the escape of and publicly cuts Murron’s throat unbeknown to Wallace who believed her to have escaped.
In London, Wallace is brought before the English magistrates and tried for high treason. He denies the charges, declaring that he had never accepted Edward as his King. The court responds by sentencing him to be “purified by pain.” Later, in a London square, William Wallace is tortured, being hanged, racked, and disemboweled. The magistrate offers him a quick death in exchange for a plea for mercy. Awed by Wallace’s courage, the Londoners watching the execution begin to yell for mercy to be given. William signals to the magistrate that he wishes to speak. Using the last strength in his body, he cries, “Freedom!” and turns his head, seeing an image of Murron in the crowd smiling at him as he is beheaded.
Some time later, Robert the Bruce takes control of the remaining Scottish army and faces a ceremonial line of English troops at the fields of Bannockburn. Cheering Wallace’s name, Robert the Bruce and the Scots charge the stunned English lines and win their freedom.
This year in the second semester we had English. In this class we read, did book reviews, and wrote poems on random things. Writing poems was the easiest one that I did because I found it the most fun. Some of the poems I wrote were Inspire, my Found Poem, The Trenches, Before I Knew It, the Connection Poem, War, and the Person. My favorite poem was the poem called Inspire. inspire was my favorite poem because it was the hardest one for me to right. I found this one hard because I had to buy a first line, and this first line was “Inspire” just one word. After all the thinking that I had put into this poem it turned out very nicely. Writing poetry can be very easy if you have a great imagination.
The poem that Craig wrote called “Poem” is kind of like the poem “Inspire” because it is talking about God, and in my poem God is an inspiration.
The “Red Badge of Courage” was written by Stephen Crane. The book is on historical fiction, the Civil War, and War stories. Stephen Crane is a American Novelist, who was born on November 1 1871 and later dies June 5 1900. He has written short stories, poetry, and journals. His first novel was Maggie: A Girl of the Streets. He won international acclaim for The Red Badge of Courage, when he wrote it in 1895.
In this book of about the American Civil War, an 18 year old Private Fleming ran away from the fight. Later on Henry found a bunch of injured men, who asked where he was wounded. But Henry was to embarrassed to tell them that he fled as they stayed and fought in the battle. After feeling bad he hears from some people that the fight was won, which made him feel worse. Henry later on finds his camp, after getting hit in the head by a riffle of a person on the same side. All of the people in his camp thought that he was injured in battle. The next morning Henry goes into battle for the third time. While looking for a stream from which to get water, he discovers from the commanding officer that his regiment has a lackluster reputation. The officer speaks casually about sacrificing Henry’s regiment because they are nothing more than “mule drivers” and “mud diggers”. With no regiments to spare, the general orders his men forward. In the final battle, Henry becomes one of the best fighters in his battalion as well as the flag bearer, finally proving his courage as a man.
The characters in this book are Henry Fleming who is the main character. Jim Conklin who a soldier who dies in an early battle. Jim’s death forces Henry to face his own lack of courage and reminds Jim of the stark reality of war. The wounded soldier, whose nagging presence forces Jim to face his own guilty conscience. Wilson who is a mouthy soldier who cares for Jim when he is wounded. The cheery soldier helped Henry back to camp after Henry fled. Symbols in the book are “The Red Badge” which is a blood stain, which was a symbol of courage. The flag that was carried into battle as a sign of an army’s place in battle.
This will explain it all
The birds
The trees
The moon
The earth.
It will explain all the creatures
The reason God made us
It will explain our stories
Our love for each other
It will explain why the ocean is blue
the grass is green
Why the wind blows
and the birds fly.
It will explain it all
The mountain peaks
The wolfs fangs
The reason the bird chirps
Why the baby cries
Why the dog barks
But what will explain it all?
