Puppy mills are a place where dog breeders use small cages(made of a variety of thing, such as: tether attached to trees, tractor-trailer cabs, wire mesh, or wood) to keep over 500,000 dogs. They breed the females as many times as they can per year. When a female dog is breed to many times, it can no longer produce puppies and is ‘destroyed’. Some of the things that the many litters or mother suffer from are: lack of nutrition because the facility cannot afford or would not even want to feed them, exposure of many different things because of just sitting in their cages all day, and a lack of good veterinary care. Roughly around eleven thousand animals die each day! That totals to about four or five million animals each year. The only time the owner, or miller, goes to see the puppies is when is is going to discard dead bodies from the cages or kill a puppy; they do not care for the well-being of the puppy, its just for profit.
Now not only dogs are kept in mills, but also cats, birds, rodents, snakes, and other animals. Even if you don’t care about this happening to a dog, chances are this is happening to your favorite kind of domestic animal. So get out there and help. Here are some ways you can help:
~ Do not support any store that sells puppies.
~ Spread the word. Write in your blog, email, or newspaper. Any little thing can help.
~ Help support organizations that want to end puppy mills. Donate any extra money, advertise them(t-shirts,buttons,posters), volunteer if you love animals or you just need something to do; endless jobs are available.
~If you want a animal, adopt from a humane society or your local shelter like an SPCA.
Now you know about puppy mills and know how to help. Why wouldn’t you? If you cannot give a good answer to this question, which you won’t be able to, then help.
