Important Qualities of a Political Leader

All political leaders have both good and bad qualities, qualities that allow for them to win spots into office. But what are those qualities? What are five of the most important qualities that a politician should possess in order to aid them in getting into office?

One of the most important qualities that not only politicians should possess but most people should have. People, and more importantly politicians must be trustworthy. If someone running for office isn’t trustworthy their chances of winning are greatly, if not completely reduced. If they aren’t trustworthy then people don’t know what they will do once in power. Maybe they won’t keep their campaign promises or misuse government money. If someone with a record of lying and not following up on what they say they’ll do, they will have little to no chance of getting elected.  An example of a trustworthy politician was Aurelius, a Roman Emperor. Aurelius was the last of the Five Good Emperors and is also considered one of the most important Stoic philosophers.

A politician must also be confident. If they seem like they don’t know what they’re talking about then people wouldn’t want them in power. If they don’t seem confident talking on stage they who knows if they would be confident running the country. To put it simply, if the politician isn’t confident, the people wouldn’t feel confident voting for them.

Another important trait for politicians to have is optimism. If a politician isn’t optimistic then they would have difficulties helping the nation through hard times. An optimistic leader would do more in conflict instead of just waiting for it to pass over. An example of this was Ronald Reagan, whose platform was largely influenced by his optimism.

Compassion is another important characteristic for a politician to have. They have to care about the people and the country. They have to be able to make decisions that will benefit the people and do things to help when needed. If a natural disaster were to strike you would want a leader to send help, or perhaps people lost family in an act of terrorism, a compassionate leader would do something to help address the issue.

This should be obvious but a politician should be intelligent. They should be able to make educated decisions no matter what. The decisions they make should help the nation. They need to be able to tell right from wrong.

That is the five traits that I think every politician should possess to be successful in office.
