A Sad Day for Fastball in the Olympics
by Tamara in English 20
The organizers of the Olympics have noted that the game of fastball is too predictable for softball to be offered in the Olympics. I can understand why the organizers could say fastball was to predictable because the United States of America women’s team won each and every year. The Olympic Committee would like to bring in more appealing sports. They are considering rugby, golf, roller sports, karate, and squash. The world does not seem as interested in fastball as several other sports, like baseball for example. If the Committee does not deem this interesting, check out this video, Jennie Finch
Japan has changed the predictability by winning the gold medal at the Beijing Olympics and I would imagine that fastball players around the world were happy to hear and see that game. With the exception of team USA, the rest of the world is fairly even. The decision to reinstate fastball will be made in London at the 2012 Summer Olympics. At early Olympics when hockey started, scores were very lopsided; such as when the first Olympic Winter Games were held in Chamonix, France in 1920. The Canadian hockey team won all five of their games, outscoring opponents 110-3. That does not make for exciting hockey in my eyes.
As a player and a lover of the game this genuinely hit home for me. The Olympics is a dream of mine but if they take the game out of the Olympics completely, there would be no chance for me to wear the Canadian Maple Leaf. Not only do I have the dream of playing fastball for my nation so do other girls around the world. We have had a dream of playing for our nation’s colors since we started and a countless number of us have given all we have so that our dreams may just come true. With this announcement I believe girls from everywhere had some of their dream crushed. I was always told to follow my dreams and I will. I am hoping the Committee reinstates fastball so not only my dreams continue to grow, but so others who share my love of the game can still have their dreams. Fastball, though the name says fast, does not mean that every moment of this great game is that way, like when you are in the batters box the time before the pitch seems to last forever.
